Dak Prescott Breaks Cowboys' All-Time TD Record in 37-20 Rout of Commanders

Dak Prescott needed one final record-breaking throw to cap a dominant afternoon, and he delivered it in style. The Dallas Cowboys used a four-touchdown outing from their quarterback to pull away from the Washington Commanders 37-20 on Sunday, September 20, at AT&T Stadium, evening their record at 1-1 while dropping the Commanders to 0-2.

Prescott finished 26 of 31 for 279 yards and four touchdowns, good for a 143.8 passer rating. His fourth scoring throw, a 24-yard connection with CeeDee Lamb with 3:07 to play, was his 249th career touchdown pass, moving him past Tony Romo atop the franchise's all-time list.

Lamb was Prescott's favorite target all afternoon, hauling in eight catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns — a 3-yard score in the first quarter and the record-setting 24-yarder late in the fourth. Tight end Jake Ferguson added two short touchdown catches of his own, from 10 and 12 yards out.

Dallas jumped ahead 10-0 in the first quarter and never trailed, building the lead to 17-10 at halftime and 27-13 through three quarters before closing it out in the fourth. Kicker Brandon Aubrey added his own piece of history, connecting from 60 yards — the first 60-yard field goal in the NFL this season and the seventh of his career, extending his own league record.

The Cowboys defense forced a key turnover when linebacker Jaishawn Barham stripped Washington receiver Dyami Brown and Dee Winters recovered at the Commanders' 13-yard line, setting up one of Ferguson's touchdowns. That takeaway loomed larger given Washington out-gained Dallas 389 yards to 332. Dallas also survived a goal-line stand before halftime, and in the third quarter a potential Washington touchdown to Brown was ruled incomplete, with replay upholding the call.

The bigger story for Washington was the health of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who left with a left elbow injury on the final play of the first half and did not return. Daniels had thrown for 96 yards and a touchdown before exiting; backup Marcus Mariota finished the game under center. Receiver Stefon Diggs caught two touchdowns for Washington.

The victory gave Dallas its first win of the season and continued Prescott's unbeaten home run against Washington. Both teams now turn to Week 3, with the Cowboys looking to build on a record-setting afternoon from their quarterback.
